Dear students,
We are pleased to invite you to an exclusive guest lecture featuring a former police sergeant from Northern Ireland, who served during one of the most turbulent and defining chapters in modern British and Irish history — The Troubles.
From the late 1960s to 1998, Northern Ireland was gripped by political violence, sectarian tension, and deep societal division. Policing in this context required not only courage, but also empathy, discipline, and moral conviction. Our guest speaker brings a rare, first-hand perspective of what it meant to serve the public during an era marked by mistrust, danger, and transformation.
As one of the few female officers in a predominantly male force, she will also reflect on the challenges of gender barriers within policing, and how women helped shape the force’s evolving role in a society striving for peace.
For students interested in law enforcement, conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and gender in security professions, this lecture offers a powerful opportunity to engage with lived history and the human stories behind it.
Don’t miss this chance to hear an extraordinary personal account of service, resilience, and humanity in times of conflict.
