Journalism, War & Human Rights: First-hand Insights from Ukraine

Information
Date: Wednesday, December 10th
Time: 15:00 – 17:00
Location: ST3.41

Dear students,

We are honoured to host a guest lecture with a Ukrainian human rights defender and journalist, currently in the Netherlands through Justice & Peace’s Shelter City programme. During this lecture, she will share powerful first-hand experiences from her work in Ukraine, offering insight into reporting on war, documenting human rights violations, and protecting vulnerable communities in active conflict zones. She will discuss the challenges of navigating censorship, threats, and trauma, as well as the risks faced by human rights defenders during wartime. The session will also explore the wider implications of the conflict for security, democracy, media freedom, and humanitarian protection, and reflect on the role of international actors and civil society.

The lecture will be delivered in Ukrainian and supported by a professional interpreter, ensuring that all attendees can fully engage with her story. There will be time for questions and open discussion at the end of the session.

This event is especially relevant for students interested in security, journalism, human rights, international relations, crisis response, and conflict studies, as well as anyone who wants to better understand the realities of war from someone working directly on the ground.

This is a rare opportunity to hear from someone working on the front lines of human rights defence, offering insights that go far beyond textbooks and media headlines.
